The Kano State Ministry of Health was established in the Year 1967 to provide Health services to Citizenry of Kano State through coordinating policies for regulation of Health Practices, Diseases Prevention & Control, Drugs Control and General Health Promotion. The Ministry plays a lead role in the Reduction of Maternal & Child Morbidity & Mortality through the provision of accessible Ante Natal Care (ANC) & Effective Routine Immunization (RI) Services. The Ministry coordinates and manages all State’s disease control programmes through Effective Surveillance, Emergency Preparedness, and Response.
Provides Policy Guidelines & Strategic Support to the State & Local Governments
Supports the Private Sector to establish a Health System which is Primary Health Care oriented for the State;
Co-ordinates efforts of Government to provide a uniform State-Wide Health System
Collaborates with Local Government; Private Sector; and Donor Organizations to embark on developmental Programmes, Monitoring & Evaluating for these programs’ and its Implementation Strategies.
Continuous Capacity Building/Training of Health Care Manpower in order to provide qualitative Health Care Services Delivery;
Providing and maintaining secondary Health Facilities and training Institutions.
Supervising the following agencies for effective implementation of Health Care Services in the State
Hospitals Management Board (HMB);
State Primary Health Care Management Board (SPHCMB);
State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA); and
The Drugs & Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) which ensures adequate & sustainable supply of safe and qualitative drugs at affordable prices in the State
The Ministry is responsible for developing & formulating appropriate Health policies, programmes as well as undertake measures that can strengthen the Health System through its Eight (8) departments & four (4) agencies:
The Ministry is governed by its Commissioner as the Chief Executive
Permanent Secretary is the ministry’s Accounting Officer who governs Health Facilities, Training Institutions and Special Programmes, and
The departments are supervised by directors.
