KNSG Expresses Concern Over Industrial Dispute in KEDCO Leading to Power Blackout

The Kano State Government has voiced its deep concern and disappointment at the recent actions of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) in the state.
The State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, made this knowns as a response to the NUEE/SSAEAC industrial action at KEDCO in Kano.
Dr Gaddafi Sani Shehu said the government recognises the legitimate concerns of workers regarding staff welfare, it is deeply dismayed that the dispute has escalated to a point where power supply to millions of residents, businesses, hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure across Kano is being compromised.
He explained that the resulting blackout has caused significant hardship, economic loss and threatens public safety.
The Commissioner wishes to clarify that the State Government is not a party to the collective bargaining agreement between KEDCO management and its unions. Nevertheless, it calls on KEDCO’s leadership to urgently honour all mutually agreed resolutions from the 4th Quarter of 2025 Consultative Meeting, including death benefits, exit packages, pension arrears, wage awards, appraisal increments, 13th‑month pay, outsourced staff welfare and promotion‑related matters.
He pointed out that failure to do so not only breaches trust with employees but also jeopardizes the reliability of electricity services that are essential to the State’s development agenda.
Dr Gaddafi appeals to the unions to suspend the strike while negotiations proceed, and to the management of KEDCO to act responsibly and transparently in the interest of industrial harmony and uninterrupted service delivery.
He disclosed that the state government remains committed to protecting the welfare of its people and to ensuring that electricity, a fundamental driver of economic growth and quality of life, is restored promptly and maintained sustainably.
The Commissioner, added that the state government is in preparation for re-investment and electrification partnership to boost the electricity supply.
