OVERVIEW OF THE MINISTRY
The Ministry for Higher Education was established on 31st January, 2007 with core mandate to overseeing the activities, administration, and strategic direction of all state-owned tertiary institutions, ensuring they meet the standards of academic excellence, inclusivity, and relevance to local and global workforce demands.
The Ministry is responsible for policy formulation, regulation, and funding oversight, ensuring that institutions adhere to quality benchmarks and align with the educational goals of Kano State.
In addition to institutional management, the Ministry facilitates partnerships with international academic and research bodies, aiming to enhance curriculum development, research opportunities, and innovation within state institutions. This global approach enables Kano’s educational landscape to remain competitive and adaptive to evolving academic and technological trends.
The Ministry also plays a vital role in managing scholarship scheme for Kano State students, particularly those pursuing studies abroad. Through these scholarships, the Ministry supports the acquisition of specialized knowledge and skills in diverse fields essential for the state’s socioeconomic development. By sponsoring students to study in foreign institutions, the Ministry contributes to capacity-building, producing graduates with global perspectives who return to serve and enrich Kano State’s workforce.
Mandates:-
- To identify, promote and regulate the higher education needs of the State in both the public and private sectors;
- To facilitate and coordinate the state masterplan and execution of all policies and programmes on higher education;
- To supervise and coordinate the activities of both public and private tertiary instructions in the State and to ensure due process, proper budgeting and quality control/assurance;
- To monitor and oversee the affairs of the Kano State Scholarship Board and to assure the payment/disbursement of scholarship to Kano State indigenes in Institutions of higher learning within and outside the country;
- To advise and ensure proper procedures on appointment and dissolution of chief executives, principal officers and governing councils of the tertiary institutions;
- To liaise between the Governor and governing council and assists the State Tertiary Institutions to secure accreditation with relevant regulatory agencies such as NUC, NCCE, NBTE and establish linkages with especially donor agencies;
- To liaise with the related federal, states and other donor agencies on matters pertaining to higher education; and
- Any other duty/functions assigned by His Excellency the Governor.
